Petőfi Literary Museum (PIM) is located in historic Károlyi Palace in downtown Budapest. As a national museum for collectors, its mission is to collect, preserve, and display the material and intellectual heritage of Hungarian literature. Visitors can encounter classic works and relics here, and also gain insight into the world of contemporary literature.

The museum's predecessor was Petőfi House, which opened in 1909. PIM was officially established in 1954 and has been operating at its current location, Károlyi Palace, since 1957. During the Reform Era, the building was an important venue for literary and social life: writers and artists met here, and even Franz Liszt once performed here. The museum's collection is exceptionally broad: in addition to Hungarian-language literature, it also preserves correspondence, works of art, audio documents, and emigree press and manuscript materials. It also functions as a scientific research center and book publisher, making it an important institution in literary life. The museum's permanent and temporary exhibitions present iconic figures of Hungarian literature in an exciting and entertaining way. The new permanent Petőfi exhibition, for example, takes a unique perspective on the poet's life's work: it does not follow the traditional biographical approach, but focuses on recurring motifs in the works and their historical context.

PIM operates as a living cultural space: literary evenings, discussions, museum education activities, conferences, and thematic programs await those interested. The collection is constantly growing, and in addition to preserving the traditions of Hungarian literature, the museum also plays an important role in supporting contemporary literary life.
